KYORUGI - FREE SPARING
"Free Sparring, there are several types of Kyorugi, and different styles and studios practice them differently. During sparring, students demonstrate their ability to effectively defend themselves using Taekwondo techniques. They must demonstrate effective, well-defined, and controlled punches and kicks, in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of Taekwondo principles. The techniques should be executed in a manner that, even if blocked, they display power and a understanding of strategy and placement. Technically perfect techniques that lack power and placement are useless. Sparring should be as realistic as possible without causing injury to the opponent. We are a family studio first and foremost, so we never try to hurt each other. Traditional Kyorugi includes punches and kicks to the face both practiced with control. In the studio we do not practice full contact kicking to the head and body. instead we emphasize control and respect for ones opponent and oneself. In this way we embody the true Taekwondo spirit."
